what do you think about the quality of the press? I just bought a copy and it is sounding very low and terrible

Quite a lot of reviews and comments on this one, and deservedly so! This record seems to please and unite electronic music fans from all the different subgenres! Bangin' hard for the lovers of hardcore and hardstyle, subconsciously trippy for the fans of trance and sufficiently hypnotic for the techno fans!

Picked this up for a £1 the other day, well happy, the bells is a quality bit of techno but the other tracks are awesome aswell, at a time when you didnt even have to listen to a jeff mills track to know it was going to be awesome!

The Bells ... awesome. Can't believe I had this for so many years and never even appreciated it. Would prefer playing stupid Happy Hardcore records instead when this gem was in the collection, untouched the whole time.

Actually Jeff wrote The Bells track in 1993 and didn't release it properly in 1997.He had it on like a Acetate a Heavy copper piece and it was that loud, louder than a vinyl pressing. Was a 14ich size. There is a interview he says on the BTraits show he did in 2017 where he explains it. A lot if his stuff was made years ahead before releasing.

Crazily enough, he recoreded the The Bells in late 1990! Dave Function remembers him playing it out in early 1991 in NY :)

Yes, I saw Jeff using "dub plates" along side a reel to reel tape player, at The Arches in Southwark, South London in 1995-7 and he played the track "the bells" several times at different venues. At that time the track had no name, the excited crowd would always ask him to play "the bells" "the bells" "the bells"! We all knew it had not been released and would only hear it when Jeff visited...He used to be so involved "in the mix", the dub plates would get thrown over his shoulder, landing behind him and retrieved when he finished...Happy and exciting times..

I love this EP, as fresh today as when it first came out. Kat Race, my favourite of all the Purpose Maker tracks is one of the funkiest, bounciest grooves tracks Jeff has ever made. The Bells tends to overshadow the other tracks by reputation, but all cuts are killer techno. A bonafide classic.

I remember Felix Da House Katt dropping The Bells in the mix he did on KissFm The essential mix... That sound meanders alot through its minimalism... Its isnt a solid dirty cruncher like most of Jeff Mills' harsher side of sound but its infectious none the less!

I saw Jeff for the first time hear the bells playing in 1993 in Belgium ... I stood there and I looked / filmed at it in close up... to say control and management filmed tracked my best video recording ever at the age of 20 ... there exist a another video of this moment filmed by ambient producer Seal Phuric ...I've played on two Belgian events where Jeff Mills also played between the year 2000 -2003 ( I Love Techno 2000 and 10 days of Techno Ghent ) - I am satisfied https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WESBdvsWM0k

Mills was playing it on white label for years before he released it. It's "Untitled A" on "Live At The Liquid Rooms" which was recorded in 1995. That would have been the first time that it was heard outside of a club environment.

This record came out in 1996, how did he play it in '93? Didn't release it for a long time?

So I somehow ended up with a 1997 misspress with an incorrect B side as follows:A1 - The BellsA2 - Kat RaceB1 - MasterplanB2 - ???There's a 1997 misspress listed as only containing Alarms and Cyclone on both sides but not one with these tracks.Has anyone here received a similar copy or have an explanation?

Jeff Mills fan and also don't like the Bells. It's that pop resembling un-undergroundy melody that kills it for me. It also explains why it's more mainstream I think. Cyclone for me!

i dont get why every mills fan hates the bells. of course it isnt as experimental, but the athmosphere is just amazing. i bet if it didnt become famous everybody would love it...

Agree about your last sentence but every Mills fan? I'm sure there are some people who don't like it because of the popularity of it, which is dumb, but a lot of people judge music solely based on people's reactions to their opinions. Example, the reviewer that stated "Good record - not for the famous "hits", but for "Cyclone", which is............."I mean Cyclone is a good track, but isn't it a little ego to say something to the tone of, Good record, but not because of the tracks you all like, but for the one that I like. Well, yes, there is such a thing as personal preference, but that doesn't dictate absolutes. Some people probably just don't like it. I think its a stretch to think that even most Mills fans don't like it.I like a lot of his releases, but personally I think Bells is a wonderful track. The subtle changes in it are golden. People would go nuts on the dancefloor as soon as it came one, and again around the peak of the song. Isn't THAT what dance music is about, rather than an egotistical music snob's opinion?

The Bells may be more of an up front stomper than a lot of his work from this period and onwards but this doesn't mean it is shallow or disposable. In fact for me it's so effective because it delivers the usual Purpose Maker brand of brain-melting multi-layered interlocking rhythmic complexity in a more aggressive package.

Good record - not for the famous "hits", but for "Cyclone", which is a fantastic, energizing and sparkling techno track. It's hard to describe, very dense, industrial, raw, wild, ravishing fast and yet somehow melodic... Simply makes me wanna jump immediately every time I put it on the table. I could never understand therefore how the other tracks could become so much more famous. I always hated "The Bells", I think it's much too "primitive", especially the hi-hats are quite annoying and the whole track lacks the freshness and the sparkling drive known from Mills' tracks. "Alarms" is better, sounding more fresh, but a bit lame regarding its energy level. "Kat Race", in my ears, is completely wasted vinyl space.

Finally someone who actually knows what they're talking about & indeed doesn't have their head up their ass like half of the people commenting in this thread who mindlessly believe the hype (more or less laughably had the audacity to act like a group of butthurt, petulant children then proceed to verbally attack/harass me just for simply expressing my own opinion which by this point should be the stone cold truth)! For starters, I seriously couldn't agree with you more man. I honestly kinda like Kat Race, but it is definitely wasted vinyl space in my sincere highest opinion due to how truly boring it is, plus The Bells (regardless if for whatever peculiar reason, being his most famous track, even though it personally doesn't deserve that title) is without a doubt one of the incredibly OVERRATED as well as downright uninspired Techno tracks I have ever heard to my great dismay. Cyclone and Alarms are what make this record. "Kat Race" is kinda like a Minimal Tech House.Many DJs use this when mixing on the radio back in the 90s in Chicago.

A1: Jeff Mills most recognisable work. Probably shorter than you'll remember, basic techno intro breaks into his call and response(?) bells loop. Proper old school techno stomper that will bring a smile to peoples faces. [TEN]A2: Nicely crafted but ultimately unfulfilling techno track that goes nowhere. [FIVE]B1: Uncompromising techno stomper. One sound loop subtly effected for duration of track. Not without appeal and still a minor classic but dated badly in both idea and exceution. [SEVEN]B2: Uncompromising techno stomper. Mostly one sound loop subtly effected for duration of track aided by occasional alt loop and percussive techniques. Lacks the magic of The Bells or the merit of Alarms [FIVE]

i wouldnt call the bells shallow,that things a dj tool for dancing,and for those that know..but theres no accounting for taste..you have to know what to do with records like that.big riddim.

Jeff Mills is indeed a genius. But it is rather unfortunate that "the bells" has come to be his signature track. It doesn't even closely resemble his other work which is far more ground breaking than "the bells". Jeff Mills is deep, "the bells" on the contrary is as shallow as his work gets. It's more of an attempt to dig into Europe's craze for the hypnotic trancy stuff than a testament to Detroit's soul.

It's his most popular track. Not necessarily mean his best.

The Bells is a masterpiece of arpeggiated FM, where Beltram meets Chain Reaction.

I fully agree, ive lost respect for Mills these days as he feels the need to drop 'The Bells' in every set to win the crowd.
